El genocidio continúa

Hoy se cumplen setenta y ocho años de que, el 9 de abril de 1948, los paramilitares del Irgun y el Lehi irrumpieron en la aldea de Deir Yassin —una aldea que había firmado un pacto de no agresión con sus vecinos judíos, una aldea que vivía en paz—. Matarón a más de cien hombres, mujeres y niños. Cometieron actos de violencia sexual contra mujeres y niñas. Mutilaron los cuerpos. Subieron a los sobrevivientes a camiones y los exhibieron por las calles de Jerusalén. Luego difundieron lo que habían hecho, deliberadamente, para que todas las aldeas palestinas lo escucharan y todas las familias palestinas lo entendieran: esto es lo que les espera.

Funcionó. En cuestión de semanas, cientos de miles de palestinos huían para salvar sus vidas. A finales de 1948, más de 750 000 habían sido expulsados. Los hombres que ordenaron la masacre de Deir Yassin —Menachem Begin, Yitzhak Shamir— nunca rindieron cuentas. Llegaron a ser primeros ministros. La Nakba no fue una catástrofe que se abatió sobre el pueblo palestino. Fue una estructura que se construyó a su alrededor. Y nunca ha sido desmantelada.¹

Conmemoramos este aniversario no como historia, sino como presente. El genocidio en Gaza no ha cesado. A principios de 2026, más de 72 000 palestinos han sido asesinados,² y una investigación revisada por pares publicada en The Lancet estima un subregistro del 41 por ciento de las muertes reales.³ Más de 33 000 de los fallecidos son mujeres y niñas. ⁴ Cincuenta mil niños han sido asesinados o han resultado heridos.⁵ La Relatora Especial de las Naciones Unidas sobre la Violencia contra las Mujeres, Reem Alsalem, ha calificado lo que les está sucediendo a las mujeres y niñas palestinas como un «femi-genocidio»: la destrucción intencional de sus vidas y sus cuerpos por ser palestinas y por ser mujeres.⁶

La violencia no es solo física. Es sexual. En marzo de 2025, la Comisión Independiente de Investigación de la ONU publicó un informe de 49 páginas en el que se documentaba que las fuerzas israelíes cometieron actos de violencia sexual contra palestinos tan generalizados que solo pueden considerarse sistemáticos. ⁷ La Comisión documentó desnudos forzados, violaciones, electrocución de los genitales e inserción de objetos en los cuerpos de los detenidos —actos llevados a cabo bajo órdenes explícitas de los líderes civiles y militares de Israel, y fotografiados y compartidos en las redes sociales por los soldados que los cometieron. El informe de B’Tselem de enero de 2026, Living Hell, confirmó que las prisiones israelíes siguen funcionando como una red de campos de tortura. ⁸ Al menos 84 presos palestinos han fallecido bajo custodia. En el centro de detención de Sde Teiman, los soldados que violaron a un detenido palestino con tal gravedad que tuvo que ser hospitalizado con una ruptura intestinal fueron arrestados —y luego puestos en libertad—. Los cargos fueron retirados el 10 de marzo de 2026. Los ministros del gabinete israelí defendieron públicamente a los acusados.

Esto no es algo excepcional. La lógica se ha mantenido constante a lo largo de setenta y ocho años: deshumanizar, desplazar, destruir, negar. Lo que cambia no es la intención, sino el instrumento. Las incursiones en las aldeas se convierten en bloqueos. La demolición de hogares se convierte en la demolición de la capacidad de recuperarse, de imaginar, de sobrevivir.

Toda una generación de niños de Gaza está siendo aniquilada de esta manera. Una investigación revisada por pares publicada en 2025 reveló que, entre los habitantes de Gaza desplazados, el 67,8 % cumple los criterios para el trastorno de estrés postraumático (TEPT), el 79,3 % para la ansiedad de moderada a grave y el 84,5 % para la depresión de moderada a grave. ⁹ Un estudio de 2026 publicado en Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Mental Health reveló que el 57,8 % de los niños desplazados cumple los criterios para un probable trastorno de estrés postraumático.¹⁰ El 96 % de los niños de Gaza siente que la muerte es inminente.¹¹ UNICEF informa de que 1,1 millones de niños necesitan apoyo psicosocial y de salud mental, y ha declarado que no hay ningún otro lugar en el mundo donde todos y cada uno de los niños requieran tal atención. ¹² El único hospital psiquiátrico de Gaza fue destruido en noviembre de 2023.

Los servicios especializados de salud mental siguen siendo casi totalmente inaccesibles. Los medicamentos psicotrópicos se recetan en función de lo que se puede encontrar, no de lo que se necesita.¹³ Se trata de una privación deliberada de la capacidad de todo un pueblo para tener un futuro.

La misma lógica opera en toda la región, impuesta por la misma impunidad. A partir de esta semana, Estados Unidos e Israel llevan cuarenta días en guerra contra Irán, con un frágil alto el fuego negociado hace apenas dos días. Israel excluyó explícitamente al Líbano de ese alto el fuego y, horas después de su anuncio, lanzó su mayor ataque coordinado de la guerra: más de 100 objetivos en diez minutos, matando al menos a 254 personas. En el Líbano, 1,2 millones de personas, una quinta parte de la población, han sido desplazadas. ¹⁴ En Cisjordania, la Operación Muro de Hierro ha desplazado a más de 40 000 palestinos, ha demolido campamentos de refugiados enteros y ha desencadenado una oleada histórica de violencia por parte de los colonos.¹⁵ Estados Unidos ha vetado siete resoluciones del Consejo de Seguridad que pedían un alto el fuego en Gaza. Las órdenes de detención de la CPI contra Netanyahu siguen sin ejecutarse. El caso de genocidio ante la CIJ se prolonga ya por tercer año. La Comisión de Investigación de la ONU concluyó en septiembre de 2025 que Israel está cometiendo genocidio.¹⁶ El mundo lo escuchó. El mundo no actuó.

No creemos que las instituciones salvarán a Palestina. Utilizamos los mecanismos institucionales —tribunales, cartas, organismos profesionales, resoluciones— no porque confiemos en que impartirán justicia, sino porque las familias palestinas están muriendo mientras nosotros teorizamos sobre su insuficiencia, y todo instrumento disponible debe emplearse para frenar la matanza. Pero somos realistas: la petición no desmantela la estructura. Solo la negativa a ser cómplices —a nivel individual, institucional, a cualquier escala— comienza a lograrlo.

Lo que perdura es el sumud. La firmeza. La negativa a desaparecer.

The Genocide Continues

Seventy-eight years ago today, on April 9, 1948, Irgun and Lehi paramilitaries stormed the village of Deir Yassin — a village that had signed a non-aggression pact with its Jewish neighbors, a village at peace. They killed over one hundred men, women, and children. They committed sexual violence against women and girls. They mutilated bodies. They loaded survivors onto trucks and paraded them through the streets of Jerusalem. Then they broadcast what they had done, deliberately, so that every Palestinian village would hear, and every Palestinian family would understand: this is what awaits you.

It worked. Within weeks, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were fleeing for their lives. By the end of 1948, more than 750,000 had been expelled. The men who ordered the massacre at Deir Yassin — Menachem Begin, Yitzhak Shamir — were never held accountable. They became prime ministers. The Nakba was not a catastrophe that befell the Palestinian people. It was a structure that was built around them. And it has never been dismantled.¹

We mark this anniversary not as history but as present tense. The genocide in Gaza has not stopped. As of early 2026, over 72,000 Palestinians have been killed,² with peer-reviewed research in The Lancet estimating a 41 percent undercount of actual deaths.³ More than 33,000 of the dead are women and girls.⁴ Fifty thousand children have been killed or injured.⁵ The UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women, Reem Alsalem, has named what is happening to Palestinian women and girls a «femi-genocide» — the intentional destruction of their lives and bodies for being Palestinian and for being women.⁶

The violence is not only physical. It is sexual. In March 2025, the UN Independent Commission of Inquiry published a 49-page report documenting that Israeli forces committed sexual violence against Palestinians so widespread it can only be considered systematic.⁷ The Commission documented compulsory nudity, rape, electrocution of genitals, insertion of objects into detainees’ bodies — acts carried out under explicit orders from Israel’s civilian and military leadership, and photographed and shared on social media by the soldiers who committed them. B’Tselem’s January 2026 report, Living Hell, confirmed that Israeli prisons continue to function as a network of torture camps.⁸ At least 84 Palestinian prisoners have died in custody. At Sde Teiman detention facility, soldiers who raped a Palestinian detainee so severely he was hospitalized with a ruptured bowel were arrested — then released. Charges were dropped on March 10, 2026. Israeli cabinet ministers publicly defended the accused.

This is not exceptional. The logic is continuous across seventy-eight years: dehumanize, displace, destroy, deny. What changes is not the intention but the instrument. Village raids become blockades. The demolition of homes becomes the demolition of the capacity to recover, to imagine, to survive.

Gaza’s entire generation of children is being annihilated in this way. Peer-reviewed research published in 2025 found that among displaced Gazans, 67.8 percent meet criteria for PTSD, 79.3 percent for moderate-to-severe anxiety, and 84.5 percent for moderate-to-severe depression.⁹ A 2026 study in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Mental Health found 57.8 percent of displaced children meet criteria for probable PTSD.¹⁰ Ninety-six percent of children in Gaza feel that death is imminent.¹¹ UNICEF reports that 1.1 million children need mental health and psychosocial support — and has stated that there is nowhere else in the world where every single child requires such care.¹² Gaza’s only psychiatric hospital was destroyed in November 2023.

Specialist mental health services remain almost entirely unavailable. Psychotropic medications are prescribed based on what can be found, not what is needed.¹³ This is the deliberate foreclosure of an entire people’s capacity for futurity.

The same logic operates across the region, enforced by the same impunity. As of this week, the United States and Israel have been waging war on Iran for forty days, with a fragile ceasefire brokered only two days ago. Israel explicitly excluded Lebanon from that ceasefire and, hours after its announcement, launched its largest coordinated strike of the war — over 100 targets in ten minutes, killing at least 254 people. In Lebanon, 1.2 million people, one-fifth of the population, have been displaced.¹⁴ In the West Bank, Operation Iron Wall has displaced over 40,000 Palestinians, demolished entire refugee camps, and unleashed a historic surge of settler violence.¹⁵ The United States has vetoed seven Security Council resolutions calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. The ICC’s arrest warrants for Netanyahu remain unenforced. The ICJ genocide case drags into its third year. The UN Commission of Inquiry found in September 2025 that Israel is committing genocide.¹⁶ The world heard. The world did not act.

We do not believe that institutions will save Palestine. We use institutional mechanisms — courts, letters, professional bodies, resolutions — not because we trust them to deliver justice, but because Palestinian families are dying while we theorize their inadequacy, and every instrument available must be turned toward slowing the killing. But we are clear-eyed: the petition does not dismantle the structure. Only the refusal to be complicit — individually, institutionally, at every scale — begins to do that.

What endures is sumud. Steadfastness. The refusal to disappear.
